OBN Second Chance Initiative Craft Beer  Apprenticeship Program  will be  be a post-release apprenticeship program registered with the Department of Labor. It will be a "earn & learn" model which means the apprentices (individuals who are justice-involved) will be paid a salary while going to school and attending on-the-job training at a real brewery with experienced mentors.

Prior to initiating the program with OBN Second Chance Initiative, each apprentice will attend a 4-week Job-Readiness Program with Second Chance Programs.

Participants engage in 160 hours of intensive instruction in which they break down personal barriers to employment, develop new skills, create résumés and master interviewing techniques.

Upon graduating the 4-week job readiness program, each approved apprentice will start both their educational classes at San Diego State University and also their on-the-job training at an actual brewery.

The educational portion of the program will consist from 12-18 months of  instructional certified curriculum with San Diego State University's Professional Craft Beer Program.

Each apprentice will receive up to 9-months of paid on-the-job training with Prison Break Brewery and other Southern California Craft Beer Breweries who participate in this program.

After successful completion, each apprentice will be offered full-time employment opportunities with Prison Break Brewery, and other breweries located throughout Southern California.

Calling ALL breweries located in San Diego County, CA, New York City and Long Island !!

Participating Craft Beer Brewery Information:

Be part of something great!

  1. Are you a craft beer brewery located in  Southern California, New York City or Long Island, New York?
  2. Would you hire qualified, educated and trained employees?

If the answer is yes, then you should consider joining our Craft Beer Apprenticeship Program.

Why should you choose to participate in our program?

Simply:

  • Our apprentices will have gone through a 4-week job readiness program with our partner, Second Chance Program before starting the 6-9 month on-the-job training portion of the Craft Beer Apprenticeship Program.
  • Our apprentices will have attended ( up to 12-months) a Professional Craft Beer curriculum given by San Diego State Universities (For our NY Breweries, OBNSCI is currently talking with several NY based universities with similar professional craft beer curriculums as SDSU).
  • Our apprentices will have a strong desire to work hard and learn.
  • Our apprentices will help your company improve productivity, profitability, and your bottom line as they will be educated in the industry and trained by you. You will also be supported by OBN Second Chance Initiative and our partners in this program (Second Chance Program & Prison Break Brewery).
  • Our program will help reduce your companies employee retention rates, saving you time & money on  hiring and training.
  • If you participate in this program and choose to train our apprentice/s, you will be reimbursed 50% of the apprentice/s salary for the full 6-9 months of the on-the-job training portion of this program (This only pertains to the California breweries at this time).
  • You will be recognized with our foundation and our partners as a company providing Second Chances! This will include life-time marketing and exposure as long as that apprentice/s is employed in your brewery.

How it works:

  1. First and foremost, the apprentice will need to attend classes at San Diego State University. There they will take a Professional Craft Beer curriculum that could last up to 12-months. All on-the-job training needs to work around the apprentice/s educational schedule (For our NY Breweries, OBNSCI is currently talking with several NY based universities with similar professional craft beer curriculums as SDSU).
  2. The on-the-job training portion will be for a minimum of 6-months and a maximum of 9-months. Each participating brewery will be reimbursed 50% of the apprentice/s salary during the 6-9-months of on-the-job training. The timeline of the 6 or 9 months is up to the brewery (This ONLY pertains to breweries located in California at this time).
  3. Review our "Current Positions Available," located below. If there is another position that you want to hire for that is not located in that section, contact us to learn how it can be added to our program.
  4. Review our "On-the-Job Training Tasks" for each of these positions listed below. This can be found by downloading the OBN Second Chance Initiative Craft Beer Apprenticeship Program Presentation. Each job description has specific "TASKS," that each apprentice will need to receive with the on-the-job training portion for the program.
  5. The on-the-job tasks will be conducted by you, the brewery and overseen by  OBN Second Chance Initiative, Second Chance Program or a representative of San Diego Workforce Partnership.
  6. If you are interested in going or have more questions, please reach out to us at: info@obnfoundation.org (All NY inquiries) or nicole@prisonbreakbrewery.com (All California inquiries).
  7. If you accept to join our program, a OBN Second Chance Initiative representative will reach out to you to enter into an agreement for the 6-9-months. In addition, a separate agreement will be with Second Chance Program and the brewery for the reimbursement funds of the apprentice/s salary during the 6-9-months of the on-the-job training.
